I encourage you to go back and read that one again and again. Sit with it, wrestle with it, and let it really sink in.
I have gone back to that phrase repeatedly because it is so applicable to what I do every day. I must give the unvarnished truth to patients about their diagnosis and about their responsibility in getting to where they currently are.
Additionally, I must be truthful about how hard it is going to be to get well, how long it’s going to take and how much it will likely cost.
And you know what? When I walk alongside them and give them the Truth with Love they often thank me. They often say, you’re the only one who cared enough to be honest with me.
While they have probably heard much of the same information before, I just worked a little harder to see them as human, slowed down long enough to listen, and cared enough for them that they finally heard it.
